This is a guest article written by James, the owner of Bar-K, a luxury dog-friendly holiday home on the Cornwall/Devon border.
At Bar-K we welcome groups, families, and plenty of four-legged guests to our large dog-friendly holiday home on the Cornwall/Devon border. One of the biggest attractions at the property is our outdoor spa deck, complete with a 7-person hot tub and Swedish sauna.
Hot tubs are a huge draw for guests, many people specifically filter their holiday searches to only show properties with hot tubs. But while they’re fantastic for bookings and guest experience, many hosts shy away from installing them because of the ongoing maintenance, testing requirements, and safety guidelines involved.
As any hot tub owner, especially those in hospitality, will know that maintaining safe and consistent water quality is incredibly important. With regular guest use, keeping on top of testing can quickly become time-consuming.
For holiday lets, guidance means checking water quality at least twice a day. In reality, that can involve multiple trips to the property, interrupting guests during their stay, adding petrol costs, and taking up a huge amount of time, especially during busy periods.
But even for private owners, hot tub maintenance can sometimes become more stressful and time-consuming than expected. Many people simply want reassurance that their water is safe, balanced, and ready to use without constantly second-guessing chemical levels or repeatedly getting test strips out.
This is where the iopool Eco Connect Smart Water Monitor has genuinely transformed the way we manage our hot tub.

We now run two iopool smart water monitors at Bar-K. Before switching to using monitors, hot tub management relied heavily on physical testing visits. That often meant unnecessary trips to the property simply to check readings, even when the water was perfectly balanced.
We previously used another monitoring provider, but we experienced constant calibration issues, faulty probes, and long delays getting replacement parts or monitors. Eventually, that pushed us to look for a more reliable solution.
One of the biggest things for us has been the app itself. Being able to see live readings for pH, water temperature, and active chlorine every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is honestly brilliant. It gives us constant visibility of the water quality without needing to physically test the tub multiple times a day, which is a huge advantage when managing a busy hot tub.
The included Bluetooth and Wi-Fi gateway has also been a massive benefit for us. Even when we’re away from the property, we can still remotely access live readings and recommendations through the app. That level of visibility gives huge peace of mind, particularly after heavy hot tub usage or when guests are staying.
The iopool system allows us to remotely monitor water quality throughout the day, meaning we can quickly spot any changes and respond before they become an issue. Rather than travelling to the property twice daily just to carry out routine checks, we now only need to attend when the tub genuinely requires dosing or intervention. That has significantly reduced unnecessary journeys, fuel costs, and disruption to guests who simply want to relax and enjoy their holiday.
What we also really love is how straightforward the app makes the whole process. Whenever adjustments are needed, the system provides clear dosing recommendations directly through the app. Rather than second-guessing chemical levels or trying to work out what needs adding, it tells you exactly what to do and how much to add.
Another really useful feature is the ability to view trends and historical water data over time. That makes it much easier to understand how weather, guest usage, or dosing changes affect the water balance, helping prevent issues before they become bigger problems.
Because the readings are far more consistent and frequent than manual spot checks, we’ve also found ourselves using chemicals more efficiently and avoiding unnecessary over-dosing, which is another nice long-term saving.
That simplicity is just as valuable for private hot tub owners as it is for holiday lets. Busy families, second-home owners, Airbnb hosts, or anyone wanting less stress and more confidence in their water quality would benefit from the reassurance the system provides.
We also like that the monitor simply floats in the water and quietly does its job in the background. Once installed and calibrated, it becomes part of the normal routine without feeling complicated or intrusive.
Although there is an upfront cost to installing the monitors, we’ve found that the investment is quickly recovered once you add up the time saved and the reduction in petrol and travel expenses from fewer unnecessary visits.
We run two monitors side by side. This gives us extra confidence that the readings are accurate, and if one unit ever needs recalibrating or maintenance, we have instant backup monitoring already in place.
As a holiday let owner, guest safety is always the priority. The constant monitoring gives us far greater confidence that the hot tub water remains within the correct parameters between manual maintenance visits.
The app makes it incredibly easy to spot trends early and react quickly if anything starts to drift out of range.
While we still carry out physical checks and maintenance routines as part of our wider process, iopool has massively reduced uncertainty and improved consistency.
It’s particularly valuable during busy periods when turnaround times are tight.
For private owners, it’s equally reassuring to be able to check the water remotely before getting in the tub, after periods of bad weather, or when the tub hasn’t been used for a few days.
The system also supports multiple treatment types, including chlorine, bromine, and active oxygen systems, which makes it flexible for different types of spas and hot tubs.

Whether you run a holiday let or simply want an easier way to look after your hot tub at home, anything that improves efficiency without compromising water quality is a huge advantage.
For us, the biggest benefits have been:
Continuous readings every 15 minutes
Remote monitoring through the Wi-Fi gateway
Live monitoring of pH, temperature, and disinfectant levels
Clear dosing recommendations through the app
Historical water trend tracking
Fewer unnecessary site visits
Reduced disruption to guests
Lower petrol and travel costs
More efficient chemical usage
Faster response times if water chemistry changes
Greater confidence during guest stays
Easier management during busy periods
Simple, user-friendly app monitoring
Compatibility with multiple sanitising systems
Backup reassurance from running two monitors
We’ve also found the support from Happy Hot Tubs and iopool to be excellent throughout. Ed’s knowledge has always been brilliant, and the customer service has been consistently helpful whenever we’ve needed advice or support.
Technology obviously doesn’t replace proper hot tub maintenance, but for us, iopool has become a genuinely useful tool in helping maintain standards while removing a lot of the stress, travel, and workload that can sometimes put people off owning a hot tub in the first place.
The combination of constant live monitoring, remote access, trend tracking, and clear chemical dosing guidance has made managing the hot tub far simpler and given us much greater confidence that the water is always safe, balanced, and guest-ready.
When you factor in the time saved, more efficient chemical usage, and the reduction in fuel costs from fewer routine visits, the cost of the system is soon recovered, particularly for busy holiday lets.
But equally, for private owners wanting reassurance, convenience, and less maintenance hassle, it’s a genuinely impressive bit of kit.
At Bar-K, it’s now become part of our normal operating routine and we wouldn’t want to go back.
