hot tub with or without lounger

Whether you are at the first stage of looking to buy a hot tub or have been searching for a spa for a while then a key question that will arise at some point is; should I get a lounger seat in my hot tub or not? In this post we will explain what a lounger seat is, the benefits of a lounger and some of the drawbacks.

What is a Hot Tub Lounger?

A hot tub lounger is a seat that has integrated space for your legs and feet. A sunbed-style seat that sometimes features leg and feet jets. It allows you to fully extend your legs out rather than a standard upright seat where your feet are generally in the middle footwell.

Below you will see a photo of a premium hot tub with a lounger seat. The hot tub featured is the massive Hot Spring Prism and you will see amazing massage through the body with the targeted jets on the back, calfs and feet.

What Are The Benefits of a Hot Tub Lounger?

A lot of the benefits of a hot tub lounger are quite self-explanatory. A well-designed lounger will bring the following benefits:

  • Space to stretch out your legs
  • Increased space for targeted leg and feet jets
  • No feet fights! Sometimes a poorly designed hot tub with a small footwell leads to foot wars with family and friends and no one wants that! With a lounger seat this issue is removed.
  • A naturally relaxing laying position.

What Are The Drawbacks of a Hot Tub Lounger?

A lounger is not for everyone! We actually find that if a hot tubber buys their first hot tub with a lounger then it tends to be more likely that they go without a lounger on their second hot tub. This is not the case for everyone but it is a trend that we have noticed. Here a few drawbacks of a hot tub lounge seat:

  • Reduced capacity. If your hot tub has a lounger then that tends to be the equivalent of two normal upright seats therefore it does reduce allocated seat capacity somewhat.
  • Not all loungers are made equal. Some poorly designed loungers make it hard to sit comfortably. We always recommend sitting in a hot tub dry or having a wet test before purchase.
  • Not all humans suit a lounger. If you are particularly small or tall, a lounger may not be suitable or comfortable.
  • A lounger is arguably less sociable as it faces the side of the hot tub rather than inwards like a normal seat.

What Are The Alternative Seats to a Lounger?

The alternative to a lounge seat is the more traditional upright seat. We have included three example seats in the image below. You will see that you can get leg and foot jet options with these seats. These seats are more common than lounger seats. As above, we always recommend sitting in a hot tub dry or having a wet test before purchase to ensure the seats are comfortable for you and your family.

Hot Tubs with Two Lounger Seats

If you really want to have a lounger seat in your hot tub but fear it will be an area of conflict for the family then some models feature two loungers! The below image shows the Hot Spring Propel which features two lounge seats. As you will see from the Propel below, having two loungers tends to reduce the capacity quite significantly but these hot tubs are very popular with couples who can both sit back in a lounger at the same time.
